Bats FlyingBats

Bats are nocturnal animals and navigate mainly by echolocation – they see by using the echoes from their high-pitched squeaks just like dolphins.

Bats roost in a range of places including hollow trees, open loft spaces and underground caves and tunnels.

All bat species in the UK are thought to be declining because of a combination of factors including loss of habitat and decreased numbers of insects (their food) because of pesticides.

The rangers are currently carrying out survey work in the Park to discover the species which live here. Ones that have been recorded so far include pipistrelles, brown long-eared, noctules.

For more information on bats visit the Bat Conservation Trust website – there are information leaflets to download and activities for schools.
