Consultation on the proposal to increase the number of Welsh medium secondary school places in the Vale of Glamorgan

Background

In March 2014, the Council’s Cabinet considered a report about the projected shortfall in the number of Welsh medium secondary school places by September 2020. They requested that work be carried out to ensure that pupils attending from the Welsh medium primary schools could be accommodated in the secondary phase of education in the future.

Following a public consultation in May 2015 in which the Council's proposal to relocate Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg to meet the increased demand for places was opposed, the Council's Cabinet decided to establish the West Barry Secondary Schools Advisory Board. The Advisory Board, through engaging with pupils, parents and staff, have come up with a new proposal for the expansion of Welsh Medium Secondary Education in the Vale of Glamorgan.

A consultation to confirm future plans for the two single sex secondary schools in the Vale is set to go ahead in September.

The Proposal

The Council proposes to increase Welsh medium secondary school places in the Vale of Glamorgan by expanding Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg on its current site to accommodate future demand.

The proposal will:

  • expand Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg from 1361 places to 1660 places from September 2020 to meet the increased demand for places.
  • subject to Welsh Government funding, a programme of refurbishment and new building will commence in 2019 to ensure that the new campus can meet the forecasted additional demand.
