What are the criteria for becoming a Councillor?

You can become a councillor if you are:

You cannot be a councillor if you:

  • A British citizen, a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union or a qualifying foreign citizen
  • At least 18 years old on polling day and the day of nomination
  • Registered to vote in the Vale of Glamorgan or have lived, worked or owned property there for at least 12 months before an election
  • Work for the Vale of Glamorgan Council (this only applies to becoming a county borough councillor - not a community councillor);
  • Hold a politically restricted post in another authority;
  • Are bankrupt;
  • Have served a prison sentence (including suspended sentences) of 3 months or more within the last 5 years;
  • Have been disqualified under legislation relating to illegal or corrupt practices
