Register to vote

The quickest way to register to vote is online.  Register to vote online

 

You will need to provide the following details to register to vote:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • National insurance number
  • Address
  • Nationality
  • Confirm your immigration status
  • Preferences for voting

 Postal Voting Use this form if you would like to vote by post for certain elections. (You will not have to attend a polling station on poll day).

The way we vote by post in Wales has now changed. You will be required to provide a national insurance number for certain elections.

 

You can apply to vote by post online with Gov.uk for some elections. More information about this can be found on the link in the next column. 

 

We will send your ballot papers to the home address or forwarding address that you have provided. You should receive your papers within 10 days of poll day.

 

You will need to complete and return these in order for your vote to be counted. You must provide your signature and date of birth as this information is used to verify your ballot papers.

 Postal Waiver Use this form if you would like to vote by post but cannot provide a signature. The Postal Waiver form allows you to vote without having to provide a signature.

 

There must be a valid reason, such as an inability which may mean that your signature is inconsistent.

 

If you apply for a postal waiver you will only have to provide your date of birth when completing your postal application and postal ballot paper.

 

We will send your ballot papers to the home address or the forwarding address that you have provided. You should receive your papers within 10 days of poll day.

 

You will need to complete and return these in order for your vote to be counted. You must provide your date of birth as this information is used to verify your ballot papers.

 Proxy voting

If you would like someone else to vote on your behalf at your polling station, you will need to complete a proxy application form and provide a reason why you are unable to get to your polling station in person. 

There are different types of proxy forms which depend on the reason that you are providing. You can download a printable copy of the type of application you require, or you can apply online for certain elections. 

 

The person you nominate must be on the Electoral Register or they cannot be your proxy.

 

You will receive a letter confirming that the person you have nominated to vote on your behalf (proxy) has been approved.

 

Your proxy will receive a poll card. Your proxy must visit the polling station in person on poll day to vote on your behalf.

 Proxy Waiver Use this form if you would like someone else to vote on your behalf at the polling station (by proxy) but cannot provide a signature. To request a Proxy Waiver Form, please contact Electoral Services. You will need to provide your date of birth and your nominated person can assist (with your approval) to help you fill out the details on the form.

 

The person you nominate must be on the Electoral Register or they cannot be your proxy.

 

You will receive a letter confirming that the person you have nominated to vote on your behalf (proxy) has been approved.

 

Your proxy will receive a poll card. Your proxy must visit the polling station in person on poll day to vote on your behalf.

Opt out of the Open Register Use this form if you would like to opt out of the Open register. There are two versions of the Electoral Register, the full version and the Open Register.

 

Your name and address will be included on the Open Register unless you ask for them to be removed. This is called opting out.

 

You can opt out online or you can complete a paper form to post back to us.

 

You will receive a letter confirming that your record on the Electoral Register has been amended and you will then be opted out of the Open Register.

Change your name on the Electoral Register Use this form if you need to change your name on the Electoral Register. If your name has changed you will need to fill out a Voter Change Of Name Form.

 

You will need to provide evidence that you have changed your name. This does not need to be an original. You can send us a copy of a marriage certificate, amended birth certificate or a deed poll certificate.

 

The details on your form will be checked against the details on your evidence. If they match, then your name will be changed on the register and an amendment letter will be sent.

 

If the details do not match then you will receive a letter asking for further information.

The Electoral Register is updated monthly and published once a year on 1st December.
