Christmas recycling arrangements
The Vale of Glamorgan Council will introduce a host of special recycling arrangements to manage the extra waste created over the Christmas period.
From 30 December until January 17, residents will be able to put out six bags of non-recyclable black bag waste, with the normal three-bag limit returning after that period.
Leftovers, including vegetable peelings and turkey carcasses can go in the food waste bin, while Christmas cards and cardboard without glitter can be recycled.
Most wrapping paper also needs to be put out as black bag waste, unless it can be scrunched into a tight ball in which case it should be placed in the white recycling bag.
Unfortunately, the Waste Teams are unable to collect fairy lights, sticky tape, bows, tinsel, decorations and polystyrene.
Christmas trees will be collected from designated points listed on the Council website from Monday 13 January until Saturday 25 January.
Only real Christmas trees can be accepted, no decorations and soil should be deposited, and any tree longer than six foot will need to be cut into smaller pieces.
Trees can also be taken to one of our Household Waste Recycling Centres at any time without an appointment if this is the only item being disposed of.
Those that subscribe to the Council’s garden waste service can arrange for a collection, but again the tree will need to be cut down if it is above six foot.
Cllr Mark Wilson, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “We know that Christmas is a time when a lot of extra waste is created, some of which cannot be recycled.
“That is why, as in previous years, we have doubled the amount of black bag waste residents can put out for a two-and-a-half-week period from late December.
“There are also arrangements in place to help people dispose of Christmas trees, advice online about how to recycle particular items and on what material is to be placed in black bags.”
During the week beginning 23 December certain refuse and recycling collections will be two days later than usual, while some will be pushed back one day in the week of December 30.
More information on this is available on the waste section of the website, along with and A to Z of what can and cannot be recycled.
